At Chicago's Union Station, Boston South Station and Philadelphia 30th Street Station, coach passengers can pay a fee of $25 to gain lounge access for the day.
You are able to upgrade from coach to sleeper after booking so if sleeper is too expensive when you book, be sure to check back as they may reduce the upgrade price if they don't sell out sleeper. I once upgraded just an hour before traveling!
It is possible to share your roomette if traveling in a party of two. However, if you're traveling alone, you don't need to worry about having to share with a stranger as sharing with strangers in not permitted on Amtrak!
