(21 Sep 2016) Members of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) reacted angrily to a decision by Rome's Mayor to reject the city'd bid to host the Olympic Games in 2024.
Virgina Raggi, the Mayor of Italy's capital city, made the announcement on Wednesday that she would not support the bid.
It has effectively doomed the bidding process for the second time in four years and leaves only Los Angeles, Paris and Budapest in the running for the 2024 Games.
At a news conference in city hall, Raggi said it would be financially "irresponsible" to pursue the bid any further given the city is barely able to get its trash picked up.
She highlighted the debts that previous Olympic host cities have incurred and the unfinished infrastructure already dotting Rome from previous sporting bids as reasons to justify the withdrawal.
Giovanni Malago, President of the Italian Olympic Committee said it was time for Italy to decide what it wanted to do.
"We don't have to organize the Olympic games. We have to decide whether to keep hoping to host the Olympic games or to put an end to it," he said.
The International Olympic Committee will decide on the host city in September 2017.
