4. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad al-Maliki, Palestinian Foreign Minister:
"China is a good friend to both parties, to Israel and Palestine. That really qualifies her you know to play a role if that really suits her. And from our perspective as Palestinians, we do like that to happen. We do encourage and at any time that there is any kind of readiness on her part as China to promote that rapprochement between Israelis and Palestinians in order really to facilitate the process. We appreciate that very much and we would see it from a positive perspective."

"Political settlement is still the only reliable and right way to address the Syrian issue. Therefore, China calls upon all parties, in particular Russia and the United States to step up communication and coordination and to avoid confrontation and conflict. It is important that the international community maintains unity and supports the United Nations to play a leading role in this process."

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday called on Russia and the US to "step up communication and coordination" so as "to avoid confrontation and conflict" on the Syrian issue.
The comments came from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a news conference in Beijing, held jointly with visiting Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki.
Russia has vetoed a Western-backed Security Council resolution that would have condemned the reported use of chemical weapons in a town in northern Syria and demanded a speedy investigation.
Wednesday's vote on the resolution drafted by Britain, France and the United States was 10 in favour, Russia and Bolivia against, and China, Kazakhstan and Ethiopia abstaining.
Meanwhile following talks with Wang, al-Maliki said Palestine would welcome China playing a bigger role in helping to solve the Israel-Palestine issue.
Chinese President Xi Jinping told visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month that peaceful coexistence with the Palestinians would be good for both sides.
