Prime minister Boris Johnson has addressed MPs on his plans to change Britain's 'broken' social care system.
He confirmed a 1.25 per cent National Insurance (NI) hike to rescue the NHS and pay for social care reforms, “accepting” as he did so “that this breaks a manifesto commitment, which is not something I do lightly”.
Mr Johnson told MPs that the government is “beginning the biggest catch up programme in NHS history” and that Covid-19 had placed “massive pressures” on Britain’s health services.
