In this curbexuk episode we are in Manchester, down by the Rochdale canal. We are at lock 89 or Tib lock as its commonly know. We are trying to find a key piece of Manchester's history. we were kindly allowed access to the site of a drained canal lock and section of the Rochdale canal where we could explore the once industrious canal and one of its biggest secrets, one of Manchester's secret canal trapdoors, its use well we and the canals and rivers trust assume its always been used as a way to drain the canal, its flows down a shoot about 20 feet deep and is culverted until it reaches the medlock. A great piece of the history of Manchester and the history of the English canals. Manchester's weird and wonder canals and waterways. And how could i also forget to mention the trapdoor we discovered at the bottom of the canal was 200 plus years old and we were privileged to be able to see it. a great bit of urban exploring. Its great that conservation work like this is carried out to maintain history as we know it.
