Turkey’s ruling AK Party has been widely condemned for a proposal to bring a bill that that would make rape legal largely as the bizarre bill suggests allowing men accused of raping minor girls to be cleared if they marry the girl has been preliminarily backed by Turkish MPs.
Men would be pardoned only if they had sex without "force or threat", the bill says and they will not be punished if they marry the victim. Critics say it legitimises rape and child marriage. Violence against women in Turkey has increased in the past decade, 40% of women report sexual or physical abuse.
The bill was initially approved on Thursday evening after being brought to parliament by President of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
