In this video I explain how I mill my strips for a cedar strip canoe.
I bought a bunch of clear, old growth, tight grain, western red cedar on craigslist. The boards were 1¼” x 12” x 12’. 12 feet is shorter than my 15 foot canoe so I am going to have to use multiple strips per line. Last time I found 16 foot long boards so I didn’t have to join any strips end to end. You have to cut boards into ¼” x ¾” strips with a bead and cove on the edges.
To mill the strips I…
Cut my boards at ¾”
Ripped each of of those to just over ¼” strips
Ran all the strips through a planer and exactly ¼” so they would be the same size
Routed a “bead” pattern onto each strip
Routed a “cove” pattern on the other side
*Things to remember*
Be careful - it would be a drag to accidentally plane all the strips to 3/16” by accident… or to cut off your finger.
Don’t do this by yourself. This is one of the processes of canoe building that you really need two people for. Find a trusted friend to help you cut!
