Bonsai Pomegranate from dwarf pomegranates species makes excellent Bonsai Trees for Beginners. The Dwarf pomegranate or Punica granataum Nana, which is suitable for some of the 'warmer' part of Europe. This video shows you how to identify and care for this species. It is commonly grown as an Indoor Bonsai in Cooler areas of Europe where it often brought in over winter. A semi-hardy, deciduous species, it has delicate leaves and small orange flowers and fruits, excellent branching and a vigorous grower it always has something on offer for bonsai enthusiasts.
Dwarf Pomegranate, scientific name, Punica granatum Nana. The Dwarf Pomegranate makes lovely bonsais. They are colourful and attractive when in flower, they have beautiful orange to red flowers. If you're lucky and the temperatures hold, you may even get little pomegranates on them.
The pomegranate is native to Asia, the Middle East and the Himalayas. It grows in wet to dry areas. It grows profusely during the monsoon season when it begins to fruit and ripens during the dry season.
In terms of growing styles the pomegranate can take small to medium to even large bonsais,
so you can grow them in any style.
Location. It likes a bright window, western south-facing windows are ideal. If you have a conservatory, it will enjoy it the most because then it will flower to its full potential.
They need to be watered regularly, but they need to be dried out in between watering. Water thoroughly when you're watering it and don't let it waterlog because the roots will rot very fast.
Feed with a high potash feed to help with the fruiting and flowering and feed every 15 days if you're using inorganic feed.
Prune in March, February. Do not prune after July when it will start flowering. The Pomegranates fruit on this year's shoots, so prune well in Spring or after it has finished flowering in September, October and Autumn.
They like to be repotted regularly, so every two to three years is good and will encourage lots of fresh new roots.
Wiring. It doesn't really need to be wired, it is usually grown with the "clip and grow method," If need to wire it, do so in Autumn when the bonsai is dormant.
