In today's lesson, we'redoing the fast version of ten minimal pairs between the second vowel sound IH (/I/), as in "sit", and the third vowel sound EH (/ɛ/), as in "set". Remember, a minimal pair is two words that only have one different sound, for example: "sit" and "set".
First, we'll prepare your ears by going back and forth between the 2nd vowel sound and the 3rd vowel sound in isolation. Then we'll play the 1-2 Game with ten different pairs. In the 1-2 Game, you will see two words like this:
2 = sit
3 = set
Note that "2" means 2nd vowel and "3" means 3rd vowel for this lesson. I will say one of these two words and you have to guess the number. You will then see the answer and I will say both words side-by-side (next to each other) so that you can compare. We will do this several times for each pair of words until we finish all ten pairs.
Lastly, there's the bonus round! This is when I'll say a random word that uses either the 2nd vowel sound or the 3rd vowel sound and you simply have to say "2" for the 2nd vowel or "3" for the 3rd vowel.
Remember, do NOT try to master this perfectly before moving forward. You can and should continue to practice this lesson every day or every week as needed, but trying to get everything perfect right now will just slow you down and destroy your motivation over time. Don't forget to let us know how well you did! Some English learners don't have much difficulty with this pair, but some do, so if it's difficult, that's ok! Just keep practicing :)
