Increasing your gas mileage

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The current average for a gallon of gas here in Hampton Roads is $3.20 per gallon. That's more than 60 cents higher than it was at this time last year. And with tensions rising in the Middle East, analysts expect fuel prices to do the same.
So, how can you increase your gas mileage and save money? WAVY.com set out in search for the answers to those very questions and we found maintenance is key.
Ross Anderton, a mechanic and owner of Shore Drive Shell in Virginia Beach said the best thing we can do is maintain our vehicle. Anderton stressed regular car maintenance, timely oil changes and proper tire inflation.
He said, "The only thing we can do is maintain that and keep us from dropping miles per gallon."
Anderton also recommended having a fuel induction service, "It's going to make everything fit tightly together, get all the carbon out of the motor, it's just going to make it a more efficient machine."
Robert Thomas with BG Products will tell you the service isn't cheap. It costs about $130. But both he and Anderton say you'll gain a couple of miles per gallon, and over several months, you'll see your money back and then some.
"You're probably going to save a couple hundred dollars, maybe even 300 dollars in a 30-thousand mile period, with a clean system versus a dirty one."
Whether you have the service done or not, to at least maximize gas mileage, the advice here is to get your vehicle in for regular checkups.
