This is the story of Colin Pay, a crop dusting pilot from Scone, New South Wales, and the restoration of a Spitfire fighter to flying condition...which after two decades is still the only one flying in Australia.
During World War II more than 650 Spitfires were delivered to teh RAAF. This aircraft, RAAF serial number A58-758 (RAF MV239 VH-HET) is a Vickers Supermarine Spitfire HF Mk.VIII delivered in 1945. It never saw operational service and for many years was kept at the Sydney Technical College where it was used as an instructional airframe. Later it was acquired by the late Sid Marshall. When Colin Pay acquired this aircraft in 1982 it had no engine.
This film shows how he laboriously rebuilt the aircraft from a corroded hulk into a superbly restored flying machine.Additionally there's archive footage of Spitfires in action against the Japanese in 1943 in northern Australia and interviews with old pilots including the former Australian Prime Minister Sir John Gorton.
