Why does "The Inspector General" end with a silent scene?
The provincial town is frightened by the news of a government official who is about to come with an inspection.
The local bosses, drowned in bribery and theft mistake the troublemaker Khlestakov for the inspector
Gogol said that he decided to gather all the bad things in Russia into one pile and mock them all at once.
"The Inspector is a keen satire.
But the silent scene in the finale takes the play to another level.
The characters freeze in complicated poses for a full minute and a half.
They are stunned by the news of the arrival of the real inspector.
A world of spiritual nothingness, meanness, and stupidity is frozen in the scene.
Gogol thought this scene was an allusion to the Last Judgment.
Retribution is inevitable. If not earthly, then heavenly. Nothing can be hidden from the real Inspector and His judgment.
And this should be remembered not only by officials but also by all those who do not listen to the voice of conscience.
