In African history civilizations have come and gone and with them went their artifacts, including art such as masks and sculptures. Though many of Africa's historical artworks have vanished in time, on some rare occasions an incredibly old artifact is found by archeologists. The animal themed mask in today's video is perhaps the oldest surviving Sub-Saharan African mask made of wood. African mask carving is an ancient tradition. Traditional African masks are no mere art object, they represent an African culture and people. What stories are behind African masks and what can we learn from them? What was the masquerade like that this mask danced and what message did it convey to it's people? Was this ancient African mask an ancestor, a spirit, or a god? Will we ever know the answers to the mysterious surrounding African history's most ancient artworks?
What we do know is this artifact is over 1000 years old and resembles a number of different African animals. Perhaps with more archeological work, we may one day discover more.
