RAGBRAI Day 4: Wednesday, July 26, Ames to Des Moines
Mileage: 50 miles; Elevation: 1,216 feet.
The ride from Ames to Des Moines had over 60,000 riders, the most riders of any stop in the history of the event.
Slater – Enjoyed the Dr. Suess theme throughout the town’s vendor displays and had a whipped coffee from Rinehart’s Family Farms and supported the local library buying a yummy cinnamon roll for breakfast.
Madrid – Got a free banana from The Nature Conservancy in Iowa promoting the Heart of Iowa Nature trail and saw a hot air balloon inflate.
Polk City – Listened to a great cover band named Gut Feeling.
Ankeny – Traveled through three “expo” areas at the beginning, middle, and end of the route through town; took a break by the chamber of commerce and sat in a big chair for a photo opportunity.
Des Moines – Route through Des Moines took us by the Iowa State Capitol building, through downtown with the overhead skywalks, and ended at our camp in Water Works Park; shuttles to downtown (and to showers that were ½ mile away from camp) consisted of hay wagons being pulled by tractors; never made it downtown as the shuttles were too crowded; ate a tasty meal at Pork Belly Ventures consisting of a grain bowl with protein, veggies, and chimichurri sauce.
