As BRICS leaders meet in Johannesburg this week, the threat of a worsening global trade war will undoubtedly top the agenda. The urgency to promote intra-BRICS trade has become increasingly important, as the global status quo changes. Earlier this month, China said its plan is to step up cooperation with other developing nations to counter trade protectionism. We asked Ian Cruickshanks, Chief economist at the South African institute of race relations just how important the grouping is to the continent today.
