In these video lessons we are gonna take a look at some Joe Satriani legato techniques.
Joe Satriani's legato playing is definitely one of his signature techniques. I believe he calls it the "rolling ball of mercury" effect.
The two examples I demonstrate in this lesson should serve as a pretty good springboard into this type of technique. After getting these initial exercises down, start trying to move them around throughout various 3-notes per string scale forms just like Satch does.
A few tips first. Using a high gain setting with some delay will definitely help. Also, Satriani uses extra light gauge strings 9-42 which makes this type of legato playing much easier.
Take your time and try to make sure all the notes are sounding equally in the legato phrase. That will help create the illusion of a seamless line of notes.
You are also gonna probably tire out pretty quickly. Just stop and shake out your hand a little and give it a rest for a minute or so to let your hand recover.
You probably don't want to practice this type of technique more than 10-15 minutes at a time because it can put undesirable strain on your hands.
Also, make sure you are warmed up pretty well before practicing this technique. Joe Satriani legato techniques are definitely not something you should be jumping into when your hands are kinda stiff at the beginning of a practice session.
Perhaps checking out the warm-up lessons will be a good idea. :)
Anyway, have fun and don't hurt yourself!
