Hi - my name is Kim Spudic with Ten Sigma where we provide tools and resources to help students make a successful Transition to adult life.
In this video, I discuss why student ownership in learning is so important and 4 ways to help students take ownership in their transition process.
First, students who take ownership of their learning have a stronger sense of self-efficacy AND often engage in learning activities at a deeper level. Also, Transition age students who take an active role in their Transition success are personally invested in their growth and committed to creating a happy and successful adult life for themselves.
Here are 4 ways to help students take more ownership.
#1. Provide meaningful choices such as open-ended assignments and projects for them to learn more about their wants, strengths, interests, and needs.
#2. Establish clear learning objectives! Make sure students understand expectations or outcomes and the benefits for them for each task, assignment, activity, assessment or process they do. Knowledge is the first step to buy in.
#3. Give and leverage feedback for students transitioning to adult life ongoing assessments (self-assessments) and conversations provide invaluable information for students' growth, understanding and self-advocacy.
#4. Connect new skills and ideas to the real world. For example: Synthesizing a budget based on different employment options is something they will need to do as adults.
Implementing these 4 tips will help your students take more ownership throughout the Transition process and be better prepared for adult life.
We've also created a program called the Starting Line to guide students in taking ownership throughout their Transition process, which you can learn about by visiting preparingstudents.org
Thank you and we look forward to partnering with you in preparing students for adult life.
