00:00 - Introduction & HDR and Compression Measures
00:25 - Blu-ray vs 4K UHD with WCG usage
11:25 - Binaural Audio Examples
✅ Given the special resonance of Aliens (1986), it is important to stress that the images viewed and compared do not fully convey the enhancements brought by HDR and Wide Color Gamut technology. The clips extracted from the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition have undergone a tone mapping process to SDR (REC.709, 100 nits) based on the official reference Dolby Vision trim pass (SDR, 100 nits) that is part of this 4K release. From this process, viewers can obtain an initial impression of the improvements made in the 4K version, particularly regarding image resolution and restoration efforts. Peak luminance measurements are taken from the RAW HDR source and the use of Wide Color Gamut is appreciated in each capture, as we usually do on this channel.
⚠️ Displaying this kind of comparison in HDR format on YouTube introduces multiple biases that can undermine the authenticity and relevance of the content. The SDR footage, which is taken from earlier Blu-ray versions, has to go through a process called "inverse tone-mapping" in order to integrate into an HDR framework. This process necessitates the use of a different reference white and demands manual adjustments for every individual shot. Furthermore, for the vast majority of users who view YouTube content in SDR, a subsequent, unpredictable conversion from HDR to SDR, resulting from YouTube’s own tone mapping, can significantly compromise the integrity of both SDR and HDR visuals in such comparisons. This can render the outcomes completely unreliable. And we wish to avoid that at all costs.
Thank you for your understanding.
