Growing up, many of us were warned about the dangers of skipping even a single day's water intake, let alone three days. The concept of 'dry fasting' has been so controversial that it has led to bans on even mentioning the term in some online communities. This mirrors the once-taboo topic of water fasting. Yet, two detailed research studies now challenge these long-held beliefs, demonstrating that a 5-day dry fast is not only safe but also beneficial for treating edema, obesity, and inflammatory and ischemic diseases, shaking the foundation of what we've been taught about hydration and health. The first paper, "Dry Fasting Physiology: Responses to Hypovolemia and Hypertonicity," reveals that despite the risks associated with dry fasting, such as blood hypertonicity, hypovolemia, and hypoglycemia, participants maintained normal blood pressure, heart rate, and hemoglobin oxygen saturation. They also showed safe levels of serum creatinine, urea, potassium, sodium, and glucose, with a moderate increase in serum osmolality and a significant increase in glomerular filtration rate. These findings highlight the body's capability to effectively compensate for the risks associated with dry fasting, underscoring subtle, orchestrating mechanisms that ensure the safety and efficacy of this practice. This study not only addresses common concerns about kidney function during dry fasting but also challenges mainstream scientific beliefs, suggesting a need for a broader acceptance and understanding of dry fasting's potential health benefits.
