Animals are amazing not only because of their diversity but also their surreal ability. They can do a lot of things that humans can’t, like glowing in the dark. Bioluminescence is a scientific term for this. These animals can produce their own lights either through a complex chain of chemical reactions or by a form of glowing bacteria that they host. While special power may seem other-worldly, it plays an important role in their survival. They produce light and use bioluminescence to fend off predators, lure prey, camouflage, attract mates and communicate with each other. In fact, according to scientists, producing light is a useful trait that has evolved independently at least 40 times.
