The most surreal ball of one of the most influential families was organized by Marie-Helene de Rothschild in one of the largest and richest castles of the 19th century, at Château de Ferrier. She greeted guests with a deer's head crying diamond tears. The guests tried to keep up, Audrey Hepburn appeared in a birdcage and Helen Rocha with a gramophone on her head. Among the famous visitors was Salvador Dali. The event was dubbed the "Satanic Ball" and the "Illuminati Party".
Marie-Helene de Rothschild hosted a costume ball on December 12, 1972. The facade of a French chateau that belonged to a dynasty of bankers shone in a red light that created the illusion that the building was on fire. The interior of this castle later appeared in Roman Polanski's mystical thriller The Ninth Gate (1999), when the scene of the satanic rite was set.
The Rothschilds were invited to the event by high society, aristocrats, artists and performers. The text of personalized invitations was read with mirror reflection and the dress code was required: "black tie, long dresses and surreal heads." Arriving guests passed through black ribbons simulating a cobweb and maze to get into the ballroom. The design of the room was reminiscent of scenes from the strangest dreams.
While the event may seem like just eccentric fun, many saw an occult significance in the images. On the tables were dismembered dolls and split skulls, apparently symbolizing human sacrifice. Some photos of that event have been made available to the public and give a picture of the unique event.
