This video shows the very recent substantial temperature increases that have occurred across Europe.
The data is taken from the recently published EUSTACE data (see www.ceda.uk) of surface air temperatures mapped across the globe (combining local measurements and satellite data).
The video shows that much of Europe has already exceeded 1.5 C temperature increase compared to the last century.
The temperatures from 1900 to 1970 (typically reasonably consistent) are compared to the rapidly rising trend seen from 1980 to the present day.
The temperature rises present at towns and cities across Europe are compared. The geographic shift in temperatures are also mapped - since this is likely to have a direct impact on eco-system sustainability.
These very clear and consistent temperature changes in the recent past (last ~30-40 years) have a clear impact on humans, our society and the natural world.
This data shows how rapidly things have changed and currently there is little indication that this trend is slowing.
Our future world across Europe is likely to be very hot. Greater than 2C warming in some places is already a reality and that is likely to spread across the rest of the continent. 2C rise on average for every day of the year is a huge increase. Given its an 'average' then many days will be considerably greater than that - in part leading to the intense record breaking heatwaves we are seeing year after year.
The temperature rises seen across Europe are substantial and action clearly needs to be taken quickly if we are to limit the more extreme impacts on people and the natural world that would result from the far higher temperatures we appear to be heading towards.
