The Gulf of Papagayo (meaning "gulf of the parrot") is a large body of water off Guanacaste province and the northwestern coast of Costa Rica. The Gulf and its coastline are part of a major tourism project by Costa Rica's government. Among the most popular destinations on the Gulf of Papagayo are Ocotal Beach, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa, and Playa Panama. The Papagayo peninsula is the most developed area in the gulf region. The gulf waters are home to many wildlife including orcas, bull sharks, various spieces of rays and all sorts of fishes.
There are more than 20 dive sites at Papagayo, close to Playas del Coco and within a 10 to 20 minute boat ride away. The two most popular ones are Punta Argentina and Tortuga, which are featured in this video. Most of the Papagayo dive sites are suited for beginners to advanced divers with depths ranging from 10m to 30m. I went diving with Deep Blue Diving and recommend diving if you visit Playas del Coco!
The dive sites one can reach from Playas del Coco are some of the best in all of Costa Rica. In addition to the fantastic Papagayo dive sites, exceptional diving tours to the awe-inspiring Catalina Islands and the enchanting Islas Murciélagos (Bat Islands), are available for those seeking more advanced underwater exploration. Bull sharks and large manta rays may by spotted here.
