Defence Minister Richard Marles has admitted Australia’s defence force is in middle of a “personnel crisis” – suffering a shortage of almost 3,000 people below its allocated force strength.

“What is completely clear is that urgent action is required if we are to respond to our more challenging strategic circumstances,” Mr Marles said at the Sydney Institute for Current Affairs Forum on Saturday.

“Because right now, we have a defence personnel crisis.”
