French has plenty of ways to say hello – one of which will make you sound like a native French speaker almost instantly.
When most people think of saying hello in French, they immediately think of “bonjour” (“bonsoir” in the evening). That certainly is what works best in most social situations. Between friends, though, almost everyone simply uses “salut”, which is much closer to an informal “hi.”
But what if you see a friend, acquaintance, cashier, or anyone else twice – whether within a few minutes or within the same day? Then you get to use “rebonjour.” If you’re thinking that basically means re-hello, you’re right, but “hello again” might be a better way to put it. Few non-native speakers know the expression, so when you use it with the French-speaking locals, you’re sure to get a great reaction.
Whether you’re traveling to France or planning to live there, practicing rebonjour and other French greetings and goodbyes is an excellent way to build your French language skills.
In this video, you’ll see how to use bonjour, rebonjour, rebonsoir, and salut.
