The University of Melbourne and the Italian Space Agency have announced the successful launch of an Australian satellite into space.
This morning the first Australian satellite carrying a foreign space agency's scientific instrument, left California via a SpaceX rocket.
It is currently in polar orbit hundreds of kilometres above earth.
The satellite will carry an X-ray detector.
The X-ray detector will search for bursts of gamma rays created when stars die or collide.
