(29 Sep 2013) Pope Francis prayed for peace in Syria and across the whole of the Middle East, during Sunday mass in Saint Peter square.
Pope Francis met with John X, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and as such, head all Greek Orthodox communities in the Middle East.
"His presence invites us to pray once again for peace in Syria and the Middle East," he told the mass.
Tens of thousands of people filled St. Peter's Square for a four-hour Syria peace vigil earlier in September, answering Pope Francis' call for a grassroots cry for peace that was echoed by Christians and non-Christians alike in Syria and in vigils around the world.
The Vatican estimated about 100-thousand took part in the Vatican event, making it one of the largest rallies in the West against proposed US-led military action against the Syrian government following the August 21 poison gas attack that killed hundreds of civilians in a Damascus suburb.
