My 2010 gts300 suddenly began making this Tap/Knock noise. I aimed a sensitive directional microphone (Sennheiser K3-U with a ME 80 capsule) at different parts of the engine and transmission, in hopes that some of the great minds on Modern Vespa can help me diagnose the cause.

Lola (this scooter's name) has almost 55,000 miles on her engine. She's been running very well and is very well maintained. I just completed what's known as a "6000-mile service" two weeks ago (if you know modern vespas, you know what that includes). I rebuilt her water pump 6,000 miles ago. To play it safe, I checked valve clearances and they are exactly as I'd set them one year ago. I reinspected the variator and clutch as well. All is good in the transmission.
