Lontong Tahu Campur or abbreviated Lontong Campur is a traditional Indonesian rice cake dish, especially in Java. In the past, this dish was often sold by street vendors who carried their goods using wooden boxes that were carried on their shoulders or baskets that were carried on their backs.
Nowadays, these street vendors prefer to use wheelbarrows to transport the goods and tools needed to prepare Lontong Campur.
Lontong (rice cake, wrapped in banana leaf) is prepared at home as it requires a long cooking or steaming process. Usually overnight. Tofu can also be fried at home, or they can be fried when the street vendor is already out, just at the moment a customer orders this dish.
The thin peanut sauce is always freshly prepared at the moment a customer orders this dish. The customer can decide for himself how many chillies to add to the dish for spiciness. The accompanying vegetables, i.e. white cabbage, are cut into thin strips and served raw.
