This is an excerpt from a video loop that ran in the gallery of "Illuminated Palaces: Extra-Illustrated Books from the Huntington Library," an upcoming exhibition focusing on an eccentric art of a bygone era.
Samuel Rudder's "A New History of Gloucestershire" started out as a single volume when it was published in 1779. Sometime in the early 20th century, one copy of it grew into nine volumes as a slew of new material was pasted onto blank leaves or sewn into the gatherings in a then-popular process called extra-illustration. One of those nine, shown here, was customized with maps, art prints, clippings, separately published pamphlets, original drawings, an auction catalogue, and notes by the collector.
This volume is among over 40 works featured in "Illuminated Palaces: Extra-Illustrated Books from the Huntington Library," which ran from July 27 to Nov. 18, 2013. For more on the show, visit [ Ссылка ].
