On Thursday, the New York Police Department (NYPD) arrested over 100 individuals on charges of criminal trespass at Columbia University. The arrests occurred as law enforcement officers dispersed a pro-Palestinian protest that had commenced a day earlier. This development coincided with Columbia University President Nemat "Minouche" Shafik's testimony before a House committee, addressing the institution's response to antisemitism.
The individuals were detained without resistance, with Columbia University being listed as the complainant given that the incident transpired on its premises. Notably, President Shafik was in Washington, D.C., during the protests, fulfilling her testimony obligations before the House education committee.
The protest, which drew participants from students, faculty, and other segments, saw the establishment of tents and display signage in the early hours of Wednesday morning. As the day unfolded, both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups held rallies concurrently, resulting in verbal altercations between certain protesters and law enforcement officers. Video footage captured confrontations between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and police, with reports of minor fires being lit and at least one individual being led away in handcuffs.
Overnight, the NYPD reported four arrests in connection with the protests at Columbia University. However, specific details regarding charges filed or circumstances surrounding the arrests were not disclosed.
The demonstration on campus lawns was orchestrated by a coalition of student-led organizations, boasting a membership of over 120 entities. Among them were Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP). Their collective aim was to denounce the university's purported financial ties to corporations profiting from Israeli apartheid, genocide, and military occupation of Palestine.
