During his eighty-year life, Ambroise Pare served as an army surgeon and then became a doctor to four French kings. In his spare time, he studied the Renaissance science of monstrophy, the study of fantastic monsters. He laid out his findings in an extraordinary book called "Monsters and Wonders."
