A recent report from Axios shows that for the past 46 weeks in a row, at least 1 million Americans have filed some form of unemployment.
Julia Coronado, President of MacroPolicy Perspectives, explained: "For almost a year initial claims for unemployment benefits have exceeded the highest levels seen in the Great Recession."
She continued: "It's hard to understate the extreme disruption that is still ongoing in the labor market."
Coronado also stated: "Net job creation has slowed ... and it is way too soon to settle into a slower pace of job creation given the deep hole we are still in."
Meanwhile, the monthly employment report for the month of January was released earlier today, displaying some decent but not enthusiastic figures concerning Americans finding employment.
While the unemployment rate fell to 6.3% and 49,000 jobs were added to payrolls last month, some experts guessed that upwards of a quarter million positions would be gained.
Our pals at the Dow Jones guessed an increase of 50,000 jobs, but Citigroup was off, predicting 250,000 positions added to payrolls in January.
Robert Frick, corporate economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, explained: “Though we gained jobs in January after a December loss, this is not a we’ve-turned-the-corner report.”
He continued: “We especially shouldn’t take solace that the unemployment rate fell dramatically given that’s mainly because more Americans dropped out of the labor force.”
We still need the extended enhanced unemployment benefits promised in President Biden’s upcoming $1.9 trillion stimulus package.
It may have taken my home state a while to get out all of their unemployment claims, but a recent report shows that Nevada was able to save $2 billion in fraudulent unemployment funds by taking the time to fully vet PUA claims.
Elisa Cafferata, from DETR explained: “The magnitude of what we had to look at and deal with is not trivial. Here is how bad it is. There are three million people in Nevada. About half of them are in the workforce. At the end of December, we had received over 1.5 million initial applications for unemployment. So more people applied for unemployment than there are workers in the state.”
To combat these fraudulent claims, it took Nevada longer to verify PUA claims. Fortunately, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Cafferata said: “The silver lining in all the thousands and thousands of claims that got slowed down and weren’t processed immediately is that probably over $2 billion worth of fraudulent payments were avoided by slowing down the payouts of benefits, and adding a few more checks before we made those payments.”
That’s amazing news, and while I know that Nevada has had it’s fair share of fraudulent unemployment claims, at least my home state is taking the time to ensure that only the people who need it most are able to access these vital PUA extended enhanced unemployment benefits.
If you still haven’t applied for unemployment assistance, start the weekend off on the right foot and apply today.
Just check out your state’s PUA or UI website, your employment history and identifying documents, and let them know that you’ve been out of work due to that thing out there if that’s the case.
For honestly and truthfully answering all of their questions, you could receive a backdated unemployment check for up to $20,000.
For all of the gig-workers, self employed, independent contractors, 1099 workers, even side hustlers, volunteers and freelancers, the PUA is here to help you get these incredible government unemployment funds.
