With the 2050 vision in place and a commitment from the IMO on GHG strategy integration, this panel will look specifically at what the driving factors behind decarbonization and the steps that the global market needs to take.

Diane Gilpin
Founder & CEO, Smart Green Shipping Alliance
Diane Gilpin designed and leads The Smart Green Shipping Alliance, SGSA. It is a collaborative industry initiative created to build technically, commercially and environmentally superior systems solutions for the shipping sector. It accelerates projects through co-creation, transferring technology and knowledge from offshore yacht racing, F1, renewable energy, aviation and defence to complement deep commercial maritime expertise. The SGSA has developed the design of a sailing hybrid merchant ship externally validated as using ~50% less fuel than conventionally powered ships. It has relationships with large cargo owners seeking to enter in to long term contracts to use sailing hybrid ships. The SGSA’s purpose is to expediently execute the ship design and take this, and other complementary and discrete low carbon, maritime renewables solutions to scale. The SGSA was born out of B9 Shipping to transition from concept design to build, own and operation. The SGSA is supported by: Humphreys Yacht Design, Lloyds Register, University of Southampton, University College London, Rolls-Royce, Tata Steel, EA Gibson, MSI, Cammell Laird, Met Office, Tyndall Centre for Climate Change, National Composite Centre, Capital Law.
Gavin Allwright
Secretary General, International Windship Association
Gavin Allwright has been the Secretary of the International Windship Association (IWSA) www.wind-ship.org since it was established in 2014, this grouping of maritime wind propulsion companies and projects supported by academia, NGO’s and seafarers is working to promote and facilitate the uptake of wind propulsion solutions in commercial shipping. Alongside his work as association secretary, he also leads the policy and finance work streams, requiring regular attendance at IMO, OECD and EU meetings. Gavin has presented at numerous international fora, including as a moderator of panels on alternative maritime propulsion and innovation at GMEC 2016/SMM 2016, the Motorship Propulsion & Emissions conference and the Green Ship Technology conference 2016. He also chaired the opening session at RINA’s 2016 Shipping Efficiency conference and the 5th Natural Propulsion Seminar as part of Blue Week in May, www.blueforum.org. He has worked closely with the Oceania Centre for Sustainable Shipping on the development of a sustainable shipping network in the South Pacific and gained extensive knowledge of the small vessel sector from his work as the Commercial Director for the Greenheart project, a not-for-profit organisation he joined in 2005, designing a zero-emissions, sail/solar electric cargo vessel for least developed regions. Gavin holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development, specialising in small scale sustainable shipping and logistics in developing countries. He has contributed to numerous studies and projects on alternative propulsion solutions and helped coordinate and contributed extensively to the UN-affiliated IRENA technical brief – Renewable Energy Options in Shipping.
