I will show you how to use OpenTelemetry in Golang projects for tracing and monitoring. I will also tell you how to integrate it with popular solutions (like Jaeger, Prometheus, etc.), and how to fit it into an existing project. So you will be ready to use it to make a transition with ease.
In this talk, I will dig into the use of OpenTelemetry for trailing and monitoring in Go projects. There are already a lot of speeches explaining the theory, so I will concentrate on practice.
The purpose of my presentation is that a person who is already familiar with the concept of tracing and monitoring and probably has experience with OpenTracing or OpenCensus, can come to work the next day and organize the transition to OpenTelemetry, or at least get an understanding of how to do it.
The release version is scheduled for the second half of 2020, and it is possible that it will already take place at the time of the conference (now it's v0.8 for Go). But even if not, the library is already working, the main functionality is already there. Thus, the experience of practical use will be useful to everyone who uses nonproprietary traсing & monitoring on their projects now, because OpenTracing and OpenCensus are stopping support in favor of OpenTelemetry.
I will tell you exactly what I will tell you about:
- how to trace requests with OT;
- how to build metrics with OT;
- how to set up the HTTP and gRPC server (middleware), how to move from context to context for asynchronous tasks, and other useful little things;
- how to configure Jaeger export (with examples);
- how to set up export to Prometheus (with examples);
- how to use a Bridge (backward compatibility adapter);
In general, the talk will be " how to " driven - there will be many screenshots, code samples (moderately), configuration examples, and so on. There will also be examples with code on the Github so that you could copy them into the project after the performance.
This channel is dedicated to the videos of the GoLab conference.
