KLINGSPOR is celebrating 50 years of rust removal, finishing, and polishing with flap discs.
Reduced vibration, enhanced stock removal, less noise, and longer life: when the flap disc was invented in 1972, metalworking companies of all industries realized its enormous potential.
Fifty years ago, the time-consuming and labor-intense production made the SMT an expensive product. Each abrasive flap was applied to the backing by hand! Developing this new tool was determined by trial and error. Multiple times the inventors had to take cover within their tests because the combination of the backing plate, glue, and flaps was unable to stand the high speed of the angle grinder. Continuous testing and adaption led the way to the large choice of variations we have today.
The SMT has come a long way in 50 years. Today our product range includes over 200 versions for various applications and materials.
In its efforts to improve, Klingspor has come up with countless ideas. A dual-disc equipped with abrasive flaps on both sides never took off. However, combining coated and non-woven flaps became a huge success.
Did you know? The first Klingspor SMT was our SMT 625.
