Usually a 9 week old baby does not attain bowel control and it is difficult to say if the child is having any fecal incontinence. Mostly if a baby of this age passes around 10 – 12 times stools per day, that is after every feed. So it very unlikely that the baby has fecal incontinence. So fecal incontinence means either voluntary or involuntary inability to control the bowel movements. So usually in a normal child, around 4 – 5 years, a child attains bowel control. So if after this particular age, the child has any involuntary control, this is when we tell the child has fecal incontinence. So when the child has fecal incontinence? If the child has chronic constipation, or episodes of diarrhea, excessive gastritis or bloating. This is when they have fecal incontinence or soiling of the diapers. Treat the cause. The cause is constipation. If a 9 week old child has constipation, the cause is lack of breast feed. If the baby is on formula feeding or bottle feeding. So it has to be avoided and try to breast feed the child. If the child has constipation after1 year of age, it is functional constipation, is because of the dietary habit of the child. Mostly the children take more of junk food and less of water or less of fruits and vegetables. So child gets constipation. So this has to be avoided. More of fluids has to be given. This is how we can treat fecal incontinence.
