This video shows a basement oil spill cleanup project that CommTank conducted at a triple-decker home in Dorchester, Massachusetts. We responded to an emergency call by the superintendent of this building. A HAZMAT team from the Boston Fire Department assessed the oil spill and evacuated the building until the spill was under control. CommTank crews collected 100-gallons of heating oil from the basement floor and spread granulated clay absorbent to soak up the remaining fuel. This oil spill could have been avoided if the owner had called when the dripping oil was first discovered on the tank bottom. An oil tank magnet patch was applied over the whole but it did not contain the leak for long. Negative air machines installed in the basement allowed the residents to return to the home within a few days while crews removed the contaminated concrete and soil. Leaking oil tanks should be replaced immediately because delaying could create a basement oil spill like this one.
