Voting in the presidential elections continued across most of
Russia's eleven time zones on Sunday (16/6) -- as ballots were
already being counted in the far east of the vast nation.
Polls closed in the port city of Vladivostock at 10 pm local time
(1100 GMT) as people in other parts of Russia were still on their
way to voting stations.
Nervous that the election turnout may be low, electoral officials
in St. Petersburg accomodated all who were eligible to vote even
those in local prisons.
In Chechnya, the head of the Russian-backed government, Doku
Zavgaev, told reporters that more than half of Chechen voters had
taken part in the election of the Russian president and the local
legislature, thereby making the elections legitimate.
Outside of the capital Grozny, however, Russian forces carried
out a bombing raid the night before the election and local
inhabitants were left to pick through the remains of their homes
and to tend to the wounded.
