Britain’s new high-speed railway, High Speed 2, will free up space on the existing network for more local and regional passenger trains, and will enable more freight to travel by rail.
By putting direct inter-city passenger services on dedicated high-speed lines, HS2 will create more capacity on the existing railway for Britain’s growing rail freight sector, taking lorries off our roads and reducing carbon emissions.
Each freight train removes up to 76 lorries from our roads and produces 76% less carbon dioxide emissions than the equivalent road journey.
