The Soybean Innovation Lab SMART (Soybean Management with Appropriate Research & Technology) Farm generates critical new data for development organizations, agricultural extension agencies, and the private sector on the best agronomic management practices for successful soybean production in West Africa. The evidence-based guidance generated by the SMART Farm includes appropriate soil correction methods using optimal fertilizer and inoculum application rates, ideal planting dates, planting density, row and seed spacing, environmental stewardship practices and reliable information on local varietal yields. The innovative SMART Farm model readily translates research into guidance on improved soy production methods that are relevant and accessible for smallholder farmers. Research conducted at the SMART Farm shows that when combining appropriate agronomic practices, soybean yields of locally available varieties can be increased over 2.5 times what smallholder farmers commonly experience in northern Ghana. Higher soybean yields can increase smallholder farmer productivity, in turn raising farmer incomes, spurring local and regional economic development and ultimately improving livelihoods.
