Forest ecosystems are exposed to multiple internal as well as external pressures, and this is expected to only increase because of the impact of climate and global change (ie. invasion of pests and pathogens through trade and travel). Threats such as wildfires, windstorms, bark beetle calamities, and fragmentation, intensive plantations and excessive herbivore pressure (mainly deer and roe deer) have massively impacted Europe’s forests and increased the need for appropriate restoration action.
To address tthese diverse challenges, SUPERB was set-up in December 2021. SUPERB stands for “Systemic solutions for upscaling of urgent ecosystem restoration for forest-related biodiversity and ecosystem services”. It was funded by the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme as part of the EU Green Deal to restore thousands of hectares of forest landscape across Europe.
This four-year project is conducted by a consortium of 36 science and practice partners from all over Europe, led by the European Forest Institute, and is further supported by at least 90 regional and international associate project partners. A central element of SUPERB are 12 large-scale demonstrations in 12 different countries , showcasing best practices in forest restoration across Europe. The project is also developing a multi-language, online Forest Ecosystem Restoration Gateway to provide practical, economic and governance supporting materials, easy learnings and best practice examples for high-quality restoration.
By linking practical and scientific knowledge that can be synergistically transformed into action and building a large and powerful multi-stakeholder network, SUPERB is ensuring the management and futureproofing of Europe’s magnificent forests.
