“Zihuatanejo. It’s a little place in Mexico on the Pacific Ocean. Do you know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific? They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life — a warm place with no memory.” ~ Shawshank Redemption
Andy Dufresne’s little chat with Red – and the movie’s ending – helped improve tourism in this little neck of the world. The Wanderer Family USA is glad it did.
I know, I know; the ending was filmed in the U.S. Virgin Islands, but a week at nearby Club Med Ixtapa Pacific, and one will quickly realize what the buzz is all about. The all-inclusive resort is not only super fun, but also super affordable -- and just 30 minutes from Zihuatanejo airport!

Additional feedback:
Staff. Antonio is a natural Chef de Village who ran a tight ship. In true Club Med style, the GOs looked for opportunities to eat and hang out with the GMs, and all of them were super nice – such as Ludi, Sofia, Tyra, Maggie, and Thais. Manuel from the bar even provided a bit of the liquor dominos demonstration for this video. Gracias, Manuel! Our concierge, Nicole, was awesome, too, always taking care of us at a moment’s notice.
Rooms. Our Sol Suite was perfect. Nancy and Bill had a partitioned king bedroom, and Liam had his own partitioned dual-twin bedroom. No complaints about the toilet, bath/shower, and closet areas. The GEs did a tremendous job cleaning the room and keeping it stocked with coffee, tea, and water.
Pool/Beach. We hung out mostly at the beach because the water was amazing and refreshing. Not so much for the pools, which were a tad warm. Still, the daily pool-side Crazy Signs dancing and subsequent water sports were enjoyable.
Entertainment. The staff did an outstanding job trying to keep Club Med from turning into Club Dead in the evenings. Larry and @ViolinandUkulele provided quality music before dinner, and after that, all the shows were well-attended & adrenaline-filled. Spanish intros were always followed by English, and there was always an abundance of seating. The Circus Show, in particular, was truly spectacular. The resort even threw in a Part 2 later in the week as the much-anticipated Trapeze Show was canceled because of the pesky rain. By the way, that day was the only time we had rain of any significance – not bad for rainy season!
Activities. A huge part of Club Med life is the trapeze, and the team there was amazing! The GOs were talented instructors who ensured all GMs had fun and stayed safe. Soldier Bill wishes his toe was completely healed in order to participate, but there’s always next time! GO Emmanuel’s Water and Land Sports teams were also top-notch, and we had fun partaking in their various offerings.
The Spa. Maria and Clara were incredible masseuses during our 90 minutes of unadulterated bliss. In fact, Soldier Bill’s firm deep-tissue massage was the deepest and best he’s ever experienced.
Teens Club (for 11- to 17-year olds). Remember two words. Sammy rocks! She kept the other kids motivated and entertained while providing Mamans and Papas alone time during the week. Liam particularly enjoyed the daily trapeze, kayak, archery, and pool/beach times. The Paint War was also a huge hit. When he was not out and about, Liam enjoyed playing video games and billiards in the Teens Area.
Chow. The buffet was in top Club Med form. Usually there was something “unique” on the menu, but there was always something tasty, too. We had reservations at Miramar (the sit-down restaurant) once, and it was also really nice – with a gorgeous view of the sea.
Drinks. This is one area Club Med needs to improve. Charging for what many Americans would consider relatively inexpensive booze was ridiculous. However, the free rosado wine, light/dark beer & decent mixed drinks helped make up for the inflation-induced money grab. And thankfully, Greg the Sommelier was a true pro. He turned us on to Mexican wine, and we enjoyed everything we purchased.
Tips. Just one. Just Book It!
“The aim of life is to be happy. The place to be happy is here. The time to be happy is now.” ~ Gérard Blitz, Club Med Founder
