"Please to Remember the 5th of November" - But Bridgwater Celebrates (1922) | BFI National Archive

This atmospheric newsreel item captures the riotous goings-on at the Somerset town of Bridgwater's traditional Guy Fawkes parade. While the film is rather murky, with the elaborate floats and costumed townsfolk dimly illuminated by the bonfire, the carnival atmosphere and sense of excitement shine through, and there's no mistaking the medieval knights, their armour glinting in the flames. Shooting at night proved challenging for the early newsreel companies, but Topical Budget was undeterred, filming similar celebrations each year on 5 November. The Bridgwater carnival traditionally involves the unique custom of 'squibbing' - the simultaneous lighting of several large fireworks (squibs) - alas, not seen here.
