NASA's InSight lander arrived on the Martian surface to learn what lies beneath the red planet. Insight launched atop ULA's Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on May 5, 2018. The lander touched down on Mars on November 26, after performing a perfect and critical entry and descent through the Martian atmosphere to gently touch down near Mars' equator on the western side of a flat, smooth expanse of lava called Elysium Planitia at 11:52 a.m. PST (2:52 p.m. EST).
