Semiotics (also known as semiology and less commonly as semiosis) is the study of signs. Signs are representations of actual objects, actions or ideas of this world. Understanding the how signs are created to produce meaning is an important part of cultural studies.

This video is the first in a series of videos that I will be making on the foundational theories of communication studies. Not everyone's communications degree is the same but I think that they are all trying to get us to approach the world in the same way which is why I'm making these videos.

I didn't learn about Pierce in school, probably because semiotics was really only taught as a precursor to representation theory, and maybe also because his theories are a little more convoluted!
