“Every day after the obligatory salah in Masjid Nabawi, it is commonplace to see a janaza prayer follow immediately after. The bodies thereafter are carried to top left corner of the mosque compound where there is an entrance to the cemetary, known as Jannat Al Baqi’. Baqi’ refers to land embedded with the roots of different trees. The word baqi (Arabic: بقيع) means ‘a plot or tract of land that contains a mixture of plants’. It is related to the word biqa meaning a large expanse of land, although the word baqi specifically refers to land containing trees or remnants of trees, such as roots or trunks. The first man to be buried here was As’ad bin Zurara (ra), an Ansari companion, and the prophet (ﷺ) chose him to be buried in this place. Jannatul Baqi is the largest cemetery located in Madinah and is located next to Masjid Nabawi. It is thought to contain the graves of at least 10,000 companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Unfortunately, it is impossible to identify these graves today as they are unmarked.
It has three entrances; one on the north side, another on the east and its main entrance is on the western side. This entrance is used by visitors and for when burials take place.”
