Sebastião Salgado and his wife founded the Instituto Terra in 1998 to restore Brazil's Atlantic Forest. The institute aims to replant native species and reintroduce fauna to restore the forest to its original state. Over the years, the Instituto Terra has planted over 4 million trees and restored more than 1,500 hectares of degraded land. The reforestation has not only had ecological benefits but also improved the quality of life for people in the region by providing jobs. Salgado's work with the Instituto Terra has earned him numerous awards for his commitment to using his photography to make a positive impact on the world.
