This video explains how to simplify an expression containing the square roots of positive and negative numbers: sqrt(84)-sqrt(-24). In order to simplify the square root of a negative number the following are reviewed: the imaginary unit is i=sqrt(-1) and the square root of a negative number is sqrt(-b)=i*sqrt(b). Both 84 and 24 are factored by factoring out perfect squares and then the product property of radicals is used to simplify each expression.
