The Bronze Birch Borer (Agrilus anxius) is native to the Pacific Northwest but due to hotter summers, soil compaction, or lawn mower damage, birch trees are becoming less resilient than in the past and more susceptible to the Bronze Birch Borer.
Signs that a birch is infested include:
Branch dieback
Canopy thinning
Extra sprouts growing on the base of the tree
“D-shaped” exit holes on the trunk
Bronze colored liquid stains on the tree trunk
Our partners at the Urban Forest Health Watch Lab (WSU Ravenholt Lab) are working hard to identify tree diseases and make sure the public is well informed about how to prevent spread and eventual tree failure.
